Your fingerprint reader is configured using Windows Hello. Windows Hello is a more personal and secure way to sign in to your Windows device. Instead of using a password, with Windows Hello you can sign in using facial recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN.
These options help make it easier and safer to sign into your PC because your PIN and/or biometric data is only associated with one device.
You can use the Settings app to configure and manage Windows Hello.
If your device does not include a built in fingerprint reader, connect the provided reader.
In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Accounts > Sign-in options or search for "sign-in" using the taskbar search.
You have three choices to sign in with Windows Hello, select Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) to set up sign-in with a fingerprint reader.
- Windows 11 menu:
Once you have selected Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), select Set up
Follow the instructions to complete the configuration of Windows Hello
Configuring Windows Hello requires a pin. The pin is unique to each device. As long as you know your password you will never need to remember your pin for any device. If we manage your domain we have set the Pin complexity requirements to high to protect your security. If we manage your domain we can always reset your password if it is lost.
Sign-in experience
The next time you sign in to your device you may use, fingerprint identification, or PIN code instead of your password. If you need to sign in using your password select 'Sign-in options'.
